Where does the term ‘Malakow tower’ come from? What is so special about the Koepe hoisting technology developed at the Hannover colliery?

The theme of this guided tour is the colourful history of this industrial monument, from its difficult beginnings in the 1850s, through the heyday of the large colliery at the turn of the 20th century, to its current operation as a museum. The climb up the Malakow Tower and the demonstration of the 1893 hoisting machine are the highlights of the tour.

Living on the pulley

Tour of the former colonies

Duration: 2 hours
Participants: maximum 25
Cost: 65 Euro

In the 19th century, small colonies sprang up around the Hannover colliery, where the miners lived with their families. Living right next to the colliery was convenient for the miners, who could walk home after work, and practical for the mine, which could keep an eye on its workforce after hours. As colliery wages were often too low to feed a family, the miners grew their own fruit and vegetables. Large kitchen gardens therefore characterised the appearance of the settlements.

The socio-historical tour through the former colonies of Am Rübenkamp, Dahlhauser Heide and Eickeler Kolonie gives groups an extraordinary insight into the living conditions and everyday life of the workers' families.

Coal, coke, consumer institution

Tour in the footsteps of industrialisation

Duration: 2 hours
Participants: maximum 25
Cost: 65 Euro

The construction of the mine radically transformed the area surrounding the Hannover colliery. The shaft facility expanded, and spoil heaps and subsidence altered the landscape. Colliery owner Alfred Krupp built settlements with churches, schools and kindergartens to permanently retain workers recruited from distant regions and their families. Energy and water supplies were regulated, and new transport routes connecting to supra-regional transport networks were created.

The tour offers insights into the changes of this period and highlights how much they still shape the cityscape today. Visitors follow in the footsteps of industrialisation in the Ruhr area and explore individual aspects of local industrial history.
