Going down the mine with the family

Playing, sliding, picnicking... The Hannover Colliery has plenty to offer for a family outing.

Zeche Knirps

The "Zeche Knirps" is one of the most popular destinations for families in the Ruhr region. Here, children can learn about the workings of a colliery in a playful way.

Open for free play under museum supervision from the end of March to October:

Saturday 2 pm – 6 pm
Sundays and public holidays 11 am – 6 pm

With an underground and above-ground area, conveyor belt, mine trains, winding engine and much more, our children's mine has everything that is necessary for the operation of a real coal mine. However, instead of coal, gravel is transported on ‘Knirps’ using a technique that was developed in Hanover in 1876 and is still used in mining worldwide today.

The green areas around the children's mine are ideal for picnics.

Flözians Treasure Chamber

The eccentric mountain spirit ‘Flözian’ invites the youngest visitors into his treasure chamber. He immigrated from Upper Silesia 150 years ago. He has recorded important events from the history of the colliery in his underground diary and kept wonderful treasures in his chamber of wonders. There, children can discover artefacts from over 100 years of colliery history.
